When a monthly ticket pays off

Assume peak fares in both directions. A round trip costs $14.50 from Zone 3, $27.00 from Zone 4 and $30.50 from Zone 7. A monthly ticket breaks even at about 15 commuting days a month from Zone 3 and about 10 days from Zones 4 and 7.

Here is a hybrid example. Eight commuting days a month from a Zone 4 station costs $216.00 at peak one-way fares, versus $264.25 for a monthly ticket. From Zone 4 or Zone 7, a weekly ticket beats paying per ride once you ride four days in the same week.

Avoid the onboard premium

Buying onboard costs more. From a Zone 4 station, an onboard peak one-way ticket is $22.00 versus $13.50 when bought ahead, a difference of $8.50 each way. Buy ahead in the MTA TrainTime app or at a ticket machine.
